The unprecedented success of the United States' Alpine team continued into the weekend. This afternoon, USA has a chance to add to its medal collection when skiers Ted Ligety and Bode Miller compete in the men's super combined at Whistler Creekside.
Miller took silver in the Super-G event and bronze in the downhill earlier in the week. But Miller could go even further with a medal in super combined. He was the silver medalist in this event in Salt Lake City in 2002 and also won a world championship in it in 2003.
But those runs were a long time ago. Miller is 32 now and nearing the end of his brilliant career. More relevant to him is the World Cup victory he earned in super combined on Jan. 15 in Wengen, Switzerland. That victory came by .37 seconds and while he was battling a balky ankle.
Ligety, meanwhile, is USA's best technical skier, and his talents shine in slalom events. He ranked first in giant slalom on the World Cup circuit in 2008 and won a bronze medal in that event at the 2009 World Championships. But the 25-year-old is also the reigning Olympic champion in the super combined, winning gold in Torino. That memory could fuel Ligety as he defends his title. He struggled in Friday's Super-G with a time of 1:31.70.
